STATPHYS29.Hack

Online hackathon: spring 2025
Awards: live in Florence, 13-18 July 2025

Let’s tackle the challenges of Climate Change together!

We are pleased to announce the first International Hackathon dedicated to Statistical Physics and Statistics. The event is the result of a unique collaboration between the Italian Society of Statistical Physics and the Italian Society of Statistics, which join forces to promote innovation and outreach. Dedicated to the management of extreme water-related events in the context of climate change, the hackathon is open to students, PhD students and junior scientists from all over the world.
The teams will compete in challenges that test their creativity, technical skills and problem-solving abilities on topics in the field of sustainability with a special focus on water management.

This is a unique opportunity for scientists, developers and enthusiasts to collaborate in developing innovative solutions to mitigate the effects of floods, droughts, and other extreme hydrological phenomena. By participating, you will have the opportunity to work in multidisciplinary teams and present your ideas during the International Conference on Statistical Physics Statphys29, gaining global visibility.

The event will focus on topics such as predictive modeling for sustainable water resource management and the development of early warning systems.

The Hackathon will be carried out online before the conference start (spring time). The winners award ceremony will take place during the conference, in the same session of the Boltzmann medal award, the most prestigious prize in statistical physics.

how to participate

The StatPhys29 Hackathon will feature a Data Science competition that includes developing front-end solutions in Palantir Foundry. Participating teams will analyze climate and water management data related to the Tuscany region, build predictive models, and create data visualization solutions for the local populations in the studied areas.

This competition is open to students from universities worldwide, including those enrolled in bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral programs.

The event offers an opportunity to test skills, develop new competencies, and collaborate in an international setting on a project of significant importance.

By participating in the StatPhys29 Hackathon, teams can contribute to supporting regional communities in responding to the challenges of climate change, thereby enhancing the resilience and sustainability of these areas.
